1st-6th March is Lymphoedema Awareness Week, an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of early lymphoedema detection and share information about how Dougie Mac can support those affected.
Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid in the body’s tissues; most commonly in the leg or arm. This chronic condition affects more than 200,000 people in the UK each year.
Lymphoedema occurs when the lymphatic system (a network of vessels in the body that helps to remove excess fluid and fight infection) isn’t working properly. The lymphatic system can sometimes stop working as a result of cancer or cancer treatments.
As well as discomfort caused by swelling, intense heaviness of limbs and skin infections, lymphoedema can also cause emotional distress as the physical appearance can impact on body image and self confidence.
Here at the hospice, our lymphoedema team, Jane and Josh support patients with treatment to control swelling and reduce discomfort and fluid build-up. The team also offer advice on how patients can manage the condition at home as part of their everyday routine including the use of compression garments, massage techniques and gentle exercise.
In 2020, Jane and Josh supported almost 100 new patients affected by lymphoedema while supporting the work of our Inpatient Unit.
To raise awareness of lymphoedema, we’re wearing odd socks on Tuesday 2nd March and celebrating the remarkable service here at the hospice.
